Balayage

Balayage vs highlights: which technique should you choose?

6-minute read

It is the question our colourists at Salon En Vogue hear most often: should I choose balayage or classic highlights? Both techniques lighten the hair and create dimension, but in very different ways. The result, maintenance, cost and grow-out vary considerably. This complete guide will help you make the right choice.

What is balayage?

The word balayage comes from the French verb meaning to sweep. It is a freehand technique in which the colourist paints lightener directly onto selected sections without foils. The sweeping motion places more product through the mid-lengths and ends while keeping the roots softer and more natural.

The result is sunlit radiance, as though your hair lightened naturally in the sun. Transitions from the base into lighter areas are subtle, blended and natural. This artistic technique requires an expert eye and skilled hand, hallmarks of our colourist team in Montreal.

What are traditional highlights?

The highlights use a different technique. Hair is divided into fine, even sections and wrapped in foils with lightener. The foil isolates each section and allows more even, controlled lift.

The result is cleaner, more defined and more uniform than balayage. Highlights create stronger contrast and more consistent coverage, ideal for clients seeking a more visible change or an all-over blonde effect.

Side-by-side comparison

Natural versus defined

Le balayage offers a natural, sunlit look with soft transitions. Traditional highlights create more even, structured lift. Choose balayage for an effortless, just-back-from-holiday effect, or highlights for a stronger, more uniform blonde.

Maintenance and grow-out

This is where balayage has a major advantage. Because the roots remain natural and blended, grow-out is much softer. Touch-ups can be spaced three to four months apart without a visible line. Highlights begin closer to the roots and usually need maintenance every six to eight weeks.

Appointment length

A balayage appointment averages two to three hours, depending on length and thickness. Full highlights may take two and a half to four hours, because every section must be isolated in foil.

Cost

The two techniques are similarly priced at Salon En Vogue. However, balayage is often less expensive over a year because touch-ups are less frequent. Visit our colour pricing for details.

Hair damage

Balayage is generally gentler because it does not lighten the roots and targets specific areas. Highlights cover more surface and expose more hair to lightener. In both cases, regular hair treatments are essential for maintaining healthy hair.

Which technique is right for you?

Balayage is ideal if you...

  • Want a natural, sunlit look
  • Prefer less frequent touch-ups , every three to four months
  • Have long or medium-length hair that showcases a blended effect
  • Want a first colour experience that is gentle and gradual
  • Want to add dimension without dramatically changing colour

Highlights are ideal if you...

  • Want more overall lightening and even coverage
  • Have short hair or a bob, where balayage may lack the length needed to blend
  • Want a very light blonde or platinum result throughout
  • Prefer a stronger contrast between your base and lighter sections
  • Want to blend grey hair more effectively

Why not combine both?

Many Salon En Vogue clients combine both techniques. Our colourists may use foils at the roots and crown for stronger lift, then add balayage through the mid-lengths and ends for a natural blend. This hybrid offers the best of both worlds.
